Academic Education
Academics is priority for fraternities. In contrast to negative stereotypes, Greeks statistically outperform their peers in grades. The Greek average GPA is almost always higher than the all-mens average. Greeks are also more likely to graduate from college than normal college students. Joining a fraternity puts a focus of excellence and achievement for the individual to strive towards.
Leadership Education:
Fraternities teach kids to be men and men to be leaders. Fraternities give their men the opportunity to take on positions of leadership within the fraternity that will prepare them to be leaders in their professional jobs. Fraternity men get the opportunity to lead their chapters by running different committees or representing their fraternity on their Executive Board. Many chapters also encourage their members to take positions of leadership throughout the campus. Fraternity men at NIU are involved as leaders such as the Student Association Executive Board and Senators and leaders in smaller organizations around campus.
Becoming A New Greek (BANG):
"Becoming A New Greek" is part of New Member Education for the IFC. Each semester the IFC requires each of the chapters to be trained as Greek leaders. IFC chapters choose their up-and-coming members to participate in BANG to learn the values, skills, and demands that it takes to be a leader. Special guest speakers come in and teach the new Greeks skills from the real world. This year's speaker is still to be determined.
