IFC Tugs

  • NIU IFC TUGS

The Men's Fraternity competition known as "Tugs" is the annual competition in the NIU Greek system. The simplest way to describe Tugs is "Tug-of-war, with trenches." The men in the trenches work together by applying simultaneous force against the trenches to slowly take the rope from the other team. The Tugs competition is so much more than simply Tug-of-War.

Tugs combines teamwork, technique, and overall Tugs 2010 was held just outside the Convocation Centertenacity from each team who are fighting for inches of the rope at a time. The best teams in the Tugs competition are not the best because they are the biggest, but because their technique is sound and perfected. Competitors in the Tugs competition begin training in January even though the competition is not until April. Many chapters start a strict regiment of weight lifting and technique training to get ready for the competition.

Planning for the Tugs 2012 Tournament will begin in December of 2011.  The event is currently scheduled to be held at East Huskie Stadium which is the same location of the Tugs 2010 and 2011 tournament.

    TUGS 2011 Finals

NIU IFC Tugs 2011 finished as yet another successful and exciting week for the Northern Illinois campus. Despite harsh weather and near constant rain throughout the week, the trenches held long enough for all the matches to proceed.

The outstanding success of the event was accompanied by an increasingly comepetitive environment amongst the teams that were participating. The championship match marked a rematch of last year's championship. Phi Kappa Psi/Sigma Alpha Mu combined team took home a first place trophy for the first time in the team's history.
